The detective in this historical mystery is Mycroft Holmes, elder brother of the famous Baker Street sleuth. Mycroft is deeply involved in British political affairs, and sends his dependable assistant, Guthrie--who narrates the tale--to fetch a secret treaty. But as soon as Guthrie starts out on his task, he runs into The Brotherhood, a group of criminals bent on overthrowing all the major European powers.
