This story, which is set in 1856, follows the adventures of 12-year-old Charlotte as she and her father travel from Wales to the United States where they plan to settle with the Mormon community in Utah. During their journey, a pregnant woman who is traveling with them dies during childbirth. Still missing her own deceased mother and siblings, Charlotte reaches out to the woman`s baby--an infant girl named Rose. When Rose`s father is unable to care for his newborn daughter, Charlotte, with the help of several travelling companion becomes, Rose`s guardian and promises to get the child safely to Utah.
