A rootless young South African woman in France in the late 1950s seeks refuge after an abortion at the country chateau of family friends. There a pair of decadent aristocrats take advantage of her. At the same time, she tries desperately to understand the truth behind the diaries she finds in the attic, kept by two young Jewish girls who were hidden there during the German occupation of France in World War II.
