Composed in the late 14th century, this is one of the first serious poems composed in the English language (Middle English). The narrator, called Amans, discusses love with his confessor, Venus. Several stories, many of them adaptations of the ROMAN DE LA ROSE, the Bible, Vincent de Beauvais, Ovid, and others, are told in the course of the eight books, introduced by a Prologue. Though primarily in English, Gower glossed the text with Latin notes, and did occasionally intersperse a Latin verse here and there. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only.
