When Kate Kempden's sister, Marion, is killed in an automobile accident, Kate must return from Paris to the family estate, Crossways, in South Africa. When she gets there, all her old ambivalences about the place return, along with poignant memories of her childhood. In the present, however, Kate must deal with Marion's husband (seriously injured in the accident), growing revelations about the relationship between the two, and the possibility that Marion's death was not, in fact, an accident.
