This is the book to read explaining the inexorable psychological link between stereotypes of race, gender, sexuality and pathology. Interestingly enough, since Gilman's specialty is German literature, as well as the history of psychiatry, he makes a persuasive argument for how present derogatory notions of race/sexuality are descendants of those which proliferated in Weimar Germany.
