Thirty-six-year-old Brenda Schaefer was brutally killed in Louisville, KY in 1988. Her fiance, Mel Ignatow, was heavily implicated in the case, but a jury acquitted him. When new evidence surfaced, Ignatow confessed after he had already been cleared of murder, kidnapping, sexual abuse, and sodomy charges. Because of the constitutional protection against double jeopardy, Ignatow went free.
