Toby, a 33-year-old bookstore clerk, follows a mysterious woman through a magic doorway out of his world, Veritie, into Mysterie, a parallel world packed with gods and devils and troubled by the battle between Good and Evil. The homely Toby is told by Gayle he is the one to decide the fates of people and the world.
