Pioneers of the industrial music genre, Berlin's Einsturzende Neubauten were avant-garde innovators of the highest caliber. The group's name is translated to mean collapsing new buildings, and their revolutionary sound lived up to the implications of the moniker: along with contemporaries Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire, Einsturzende Neubauten aimed to destroy the mores of rock music. The group incorporated white noise and grating, sometimes excruciating vocals, as well as such uncommon instruments as construction materials, power tools, and clanging metal objects. The record HALBER MENSCH, released in 1986, exhibited a more structured arrangement, and was lauded by critics and fans alike; this release combines the album with the feature film made by the band as a promotional piece, creating a complete visual and aural experience.
