Elston Howard played for the New York Yankees from 1955 through 1967. This biography by his widow recalls his many successes on and off the field, as well as his many challenges as the first African American on that team--struggles exacerbated by the lack of support from Yankee management. Howard played on several All-Star teams as outfielder and then as catcher, and was the American League`s Most Valuable Player in 1963. His number--22--was retired by the Yankees in 1985.
