Thirty years after his country was brutalized by a civil war, neurosurgeon Dr. David Foster returns to his Spanish homeland. The doctor searches for Maria, a woman who treated his wounds when Foster received a serious injury fighting in the bloody conflict. His search takes place in an entirely new Spain, for where he once fought now stands a modernized Barcelona and his Maria is nowhere to be found. Dr. Foster does manage to meet Maria`s daughter, a dead ringer for her mother, causing a flood of memories in this 1969 feature about homecoming and loss. Co-screenwriter Alvah Bessie, one of the Hollywood Ten, fought in the Spanish Civil War as a member of the International Brigades.
