This picture book is a celebration of the transformative power of attitude. Maggie and her sisters Kate and Nora are staying at their grandmother's house because their father is away and their mother is ill. Granny is a fearful soul, lecturing the children about the bad boys and carefully showing them how to work the locks to keep vicious marauders at bay. The view from Granny's apartment is grim and filthy, with trash strewn about and aimless children standing around. Granny won't dare let Maggie and her sisters go out by themselves because of the evident danger everywhere. That night, the girls are plagued by terrible nightmares until Maggie consciously chooses to have pleasant dreams instead. The following morning, even Granny is in an upbeat mood, and the street outside her door now radiates vitality and cheer. Full-color illustrations by the author accompany his text.
