In a dead end Welsh town, Gareth is a Foodboy, in several senses. He does all of the gruntwork in a small catering business. He brings food to his friend Ross, who long ago lost his faith and is now rapidly losing his humanity, living wild in the woods. And, as his co-workers explain to him, Foodboy is a Serbian term for the front-line soldiers who are cannon fodder while their commanders stay clear of the firefights. Gareth and Ross lead hopeless existences as front-line victims of an economy designed by politicians who might as well be on another planet. The black-and-white illustrations convey the bleakness of the town and the barely suppressed weariness and frustration of its inhabitants, as well as the author/artist's compassion for her characters and setting.
