Nasaw`s penetrating analysis of the rise and fall of public amusements in American in the late 19th and early 20th centuries raises important questions about the link between amusements, public space, and cultural unity. In the only study of its kind, he explores the role of public amusements in bringing people together and argues that the racist bend of many amusements created a national culture for immigrants, while effectively excluding black Americans.
