In Search of Mary

Although Mary, the mother of Jesus, has long held a central place in Christian iconography, the meanings and interpretations associated with her have varied widely through the centuries. The relatively sparse amount of detail provided about her in the New Testament narratives, the author shows, has allowed plenty of room for theological elaboration by Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox Christian traditions and communities. This comprehensive survey concludes with the author`s lucid exposition of Mary`s symbolic meaning today.
