In this novel set in 1960, Mexican-American Jesse tries to establish himself in a world which often uses racism to keep him down. Determined to escape life with his alcoholic stepfather and a family heritage of migrant work, Jesse leaves home and moves in with his older brother, Able. Together, the brothers take whatever work they can find and attend Fresno City College. To further complicate matters, the Vietnam War is becoming more intense, and the brothers are pressured to join the protests of Cesar Chavez.
