A picture book devoted to a true incident involving John Muir and the little dog Stickeen joins the shelf of books devoted to the legendary adventurer-environmentalist. In 1880, Muir is exploring the Alaskan glaciers when he and the dog became trapped during a fierce storm. Hush yer fears, wee beastie, a desperate Muir instructs the animal as he painstakingly chips away at a canyon wall and bridge of ice that he and the shivering dog will eventually escape across. An imagining of Muir's journal (pared down to child-friendly language) appears at the sides of the pages, to give readers more of an idea of what a naturalist and explorer does, while the main text straightforwardly tells the story of the friendship between Muir and the dog during their famous adventure. Realistic full-color paintings accompany the text. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.
