Miyax Kapugen is lost without food or a compass on the Alaskan tundra. Her only hope of survival lies with a pack of wolves nearby. Using the skills taught to her by her father, 13-year-old Miyax, known as Julie by the white men, is gradually accepted by the wolves, especially the pup she names Kapu. Under their protection, Miyax/Julie continues her search for civilization, but starts to wonder whether living in the wild with the wolves is not better than compromising her Eskimo ways in the world of the white man. Winner of the 1973 Newbery Medal.
