As the last straw in a life with which she is generally dissatisfied, police detective Caroline Mabry is investigating a murder case when a man named Clark Mason confesses to the crime. Mason writes his long, rambling confession in which he describes how he came to kill his boyhood friend who was also his partner in a scheme to develop a video game--and who was once his rival for the affections of the girl he loved back in high school. As Caroline investigates further, a strange affinity grows between herself and Mason--and the metaphors of blindness that Mason introduces in his confession begin to make more and more sense.
