Philip Roth`s first full-length novel, published in 1961, describes the civilian adventures of Korean War veteran Gabe Wallach. Shipped stateside and demobilized, Gabe enrolls in graduate school to study literature, becomes friends with another student, Paul Herz, and begins a tempestuous love affair with the passionate and unbalanced Martha Reganhart.
