Little Amy Dorrit is born in debtors` prison, and subsequently works as a seamstress. Her father finally escapes from prison when he inherits a large fortune, and the family settles in Italy. However, a family friend, Arthur Clennam, is the victim of an elaborate fraud and of Dickens`s satiric invention, the Circumlocution Office, and finds himself in the same debtors` prison, where Little Dorrit rescues him. The two fall in love and live happily ever after in spite of the loss of the Dorrit fortune. LITTLE DORRIT is another of Dickens`s anti-materialist novels in which the villains are those in pursuit of money and status.
