Based on a folk tale that Barbara Knutson first heard in South America, this trickster story is in the same vein as the B'rer Rabbit adventures, with a shrewd guinea pig instead of a hare outwitting the fox. Tio Antonio the Fox is haplessly overmatched in his rivalry with Cuy the Guinea Pig: Cuy tricks him into holding a rock over his head to prevent the sky from falling and cowering in a cave to escape the raging fire that will soon consume the entire world. Not content with flummoxing the fox, Cuy convinces a farmer that he's a tiny field hand so that he can eat his fill of alfalfa. Cuy is as refreshingly sassy-mouthed as B'rer Rabbit or Bugs Bunny. Knutson's full-color woodblock cartoon-style illustrations focus on the comedy, and she concludes with a Spanish glossary and pronunciation guide to assist readers with the Spanish words scattered through the text.
