From its humble origins in the rural folk idiom of Dominica to its current popularity, merengue has melded its African and Iberian origins with the driving rhythms of world beat music. Ethnomusicologist Paul Austerlitz traces the development of this dance music, and the role it continues to play, not only in mass culture and international music, but in Dominican identity as well.
