On the eve of World War II, most Luftwaffe pilots considered a posting to a Bf110 Zerstorer unit the best career move available. After brushing aside the Polish Air Force during the Nazi invasion of that country, Bf110 units went on to serve with distinction in Denmark and Norway. The heavy, twin-engined fighters met their Waterloo, however, in the RAF`s superior Spitfires and Hurricanes. Only in North Africa and the Balkans did the aircraft enjoy an Indian summer.
