Narrated by the main character`s teenage son, this novel chronicles the sad and desperate attempt of a rather eccentric salesman named Roman Strickland to persuade his wife to come back to him. Gladys leaves Roman when his overenthusiastic salesmanship lands him in jail, and Gabe, their son, does his best to help--by, among other things, dressing up as James Dean for the local Celebrity Death Cars exhibit.
