Lilli Jahn, a German physician, was sent to Auschwitz and died there in 1944, while her family of five children was able to stay behind. This volume of her letters, from before Auschwitz and while she was there, provide a detailed look at a mother and her children during a time of crisis, and a heartbreaking picture of children who send their mother slippers and bread, and hope for a homecoming that will never happen.
