A novel of refugee life during the last days of World War II. The narrator Ferdinand-- accompanied by his wife Lili, their cat Bebert, and an actor friend--flees Paris for Baden-Baden, then is sent to Berlin. Eventually he leaves for Denmark to recover the stash of gold he had hidden away before the war.
