An historical novel about Melisende, the Queen of Jerusalem, who briefly ruled between the First and Second crusades. Told from the point of view of Lady Richildis, a Frenchwoman who made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and then became a lady-in-waiting for the queen, the novel depicts the internal betrayals and the external attacks that threaten to remove Melisende from the throne.
