Amy Tan penned the series of children`s books SAGWA THE CHINESE SIAMESE CAT to expose class and power issues to people at an early age. The PBS series based on her books is true to the spirit of the source material as Sagwa lives with a powerful government official who she assists, but still befriends creatures of all kinds and caste. Set in the 19th Century Sagwa is employed by the Foolish Magistrate to scribe books in calligraphy, but still finds time to learn life lessons about the palace grounds.
