In Maggie Glenn's South Carolina hometown. a little girl has drowned in the river, and in order to recover her body, it's necessary to divert the river's course--a problematic action that may damage the ecosystem of the area. Maggie, a photographer, is covering this story for the newspaper where she works. It's Luke Miller, her ex, who is trying to save the river, and Maggie's photographs of the child's grieving parents have influenced public opinion in favor of the rescue project. The situation is complex, troubling, and fraught with a variety of competing personal and ecological agendas. In the end, the river itself may be the force that casts the deciding vote.
