A history of the construction of the first roads through California`s immense and formidable mountain passes. The passage of the Wagon Road Act by the U.S. Congress in 1857 led to the first efforts to create passable roads enabling overland travel to California from the east. This in turn helped the state develop its agriculture and its commerce with the rest of the country, thereby opening it to even further development.
