A story of growing up black and poor in the South and in Oakland, California. Corbitt Wainwright is 13 years old when he leaves the poverty and racism of rural Mississippi and arrives in Oakland, where he is faced with the harsh realities of ghetto life; he also begins to understand the power of his African heritage and his own strength.
