This novel won the National Book Award in 1969. It consists of a series of seemingly unrelated vignettes brutally portrayed, containing episodes of graphic sex and violence. As a side note, a young writer once retyped this book, submitted it under a different name, and got it rejected, unrecognized, by every major publishing company including Random House, which originally published it.
