In this memoir, former NYC Fire Commissioner Thomas Von Essen recalls his experiences in the department, as well as the major event of his tenure, the devastating losses on September 11, 2001, and the need to regroup and respond. Von Essen was not the most popular commissioner, and he is forthright on that issue, but he evokes the unique firefighter culture with heart.
