As a teenager, orphaned Kathrin immigrates to Minneapolis from Germany in the years before World War I and gets a job helping Violet, a wealthy widow, translate her husband`s studies in German ethnography. Moving into Violet`s house, Kathrin becomes fascinated by her while, at the same time, she is courted by a fellow immigrant named John, who runs a bookstore in the city.
