Unica is an elderly Cuban woman in Miami who considers her first death to have been her flight from Cuba to the states. Since then, her beloved son has died, she herself has cancer, and she can't bear the nursing home where her daughter-in-law has placed her. As she looks back on her life, past and present intertwine to form a portrait of a woman who has lived a full life, though not always a happy one, and who cultivates the stoicism necessary to accept whatever else fate has in store for her.
