A Manhattan banker named Walter is on the verge of trading in Emily, his devoted wife of 25 years, for the usual younger, more glamorous version. Then Emily is kidnapped, and a huge ransom is demanded, which Walter is expected to acquire through the bank where he works. But Walter has other ideas. The novel shifts the point of view between Walter, Emily, and the younger woman.
