Beginning during the idyllic Prague Spring, before Soviet tanks rolled into Czechoslovakia, Kundera`s novel of ideas tackles the themes of love and sex and their interdependence. Tomas, his womanizing hero, falls in love with Teresa but, even after they are married, continues his affair with Sabina--a fact that maddens the devoted Teresa, who cannot understand how love and sex can be separated.
