In the near future, Tristram Foxe and his wife, Beatrice-Joanna, live in their skyscraper world where population control measures sanctioned by the government glorify homosexuality. Eventually, their world is transformed into a chaos of cannibalistic dinning-clubs, fantastic fertility rituals, and wars without anger. The novel maintains Burgess`s typically fine balance between grim visions of future life and rich satirical humor.
