Shot on location in New York City, Peter Bogdanovich s madcap comedy follows the lives and loves of the employees of the Odyssey Detective Agency and the subjects of their investigations. Timid Charles Rutledge (John Ritter) has developed a crush on Dolores Martin (Dorothy Stratten), who is suspected of cheating on her mate. Meanwhile, ladies man John Russo (Ben Gazzara) is flirting with beautiful cabbie Sam (Patti Hansen), annoying a former love, country-western singer Christy Miller (Colleen Camp), and embarking on an affair with the subject of his investigation, the lovely Angela Niotes (Audrey Hepburn). Even Odyssey s owner, Leon Leondopolous (George Morfogen), gets in on the action by having an affair with his secretary. In an unfortunate real-life footnote, just prior to the film s release former Playboy Playmate Stratten--who was also Bogdanovich s mistress--was brutally murdered by her estranged husband, who then committed suicide.
