In early-20th-century Appalachia, Muir Powell abandons his desire to be a preacher and goes off in search of adventures. His brother Moody--the older, wilder brother--becomes an embittered man with a drinking problem. And their mother, a melancholy widow named Ginny, tries to hold things together.
