In Jonathan Lethem`s short novel, Henry Farbur, a retired general, enjoys a super-conventional life until his estranged son is seen begging on the streets. Farbur`s search for his son, and for the truth about the mysterious shape in which he lives, comprise a journey through a bizarre underworld.
