This profusely illustrated study of Tibet`s important cultural practice, the dance, focuses on both the entertaining folk dances (Achi Lhamo) and the sacred dances of the monks (Cham). She looks at their historical background and development, and at the elements of performance (costume, characters, steps, music, etc.), exploring the role of dance in Tibetan Buddhist culture and its prospects for survival since 1959, including the fact of its appeal among non-Tibetans worldwide.
