In the spring of 1764, during a smallpox outbreak, Charlotte Willett and her good neighbor Richard Longfellow host a handful of guests undergoing inoculation. But when one of the quarantined group turns up dead, Charlotte and Richard are faced with a barrage of rumors, conjectures, and contradictions. Did the pox cause the death? Or was it something--or someone--more sinister?
