Jane is a fugitive who, using the name Dolores, works as a file clerk in Miami--though she used to be an anthropologist. She is on the run from her unbalanced husband, who practices magic the couple learned on an expedition to study a tribe in Mali. When a serial killer strikes the area, Jane recognizes the murders as rituals she witnessed in Mali, and wonders if her husband is involved. In addition, she has befriended the daughter of a child whose mother died in an accident that was indirectly Jane`s fault. And the detective on the serial-killer case is the dashing Iago Jimmy Paz....
