On August 14, 1834, Richard Henry Dana, convalescing from an illness, set off for California from his Boston home--via a sailing ship. Using the journals he kept on the voyage, Dana created a classic re-creation of his experiences, both the highs and the lows, in what has long been considered a definitive look at the seaman`s life in the 19th century.
