Director Danny Boyle (TRAINSPOTTING, 28 DAYS LATER) returns to blackly comic form with the made-for-British-television film VACUUMING COMPLETELY NUDE IN PARADISE. Pushing aside his dreams of becoming a successful DJ, Pete (MIchael Begley) accepts a job as a door-to-door vacuum cleaner salesman in order to help his stripper girlfriend pay the bills. The dreamy, idealistic slacker is soon apprenticed to veteran salesman Tommy Rag (Timothy Spall in a manic, over-the-top performance), whose sleazy tactics and all-consuming ambition further aggravate Pete`s crisis of conscience. Boyle`s character study of working-class angst and desolation is brought to life by Jim Cartwright`s witty screenplay and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle`s dizzying digital camerawork, which adds a pitch-perfect sense of unease to the already queasy proceedings.
