William Randolph Hearst`s butler is the protagonist of this novel, which traces his life from Iceland to New York to California, and documents how, in the process, he radically changes his identity in a desperate attempt to reinvent himself, a process that also involves the abandonment of his wife and children, and plenty of ensuing guilt.
