In December 1995 Lumpy Gravy won a highly publicized competition to replace The Far Side cartoon in The Detroit News. Created by John Long, a fireman who was also an artist, the strip garnered attention when Long drew his first nonserious work to prove to his wife that he had a sense of humor.
