Jessie is an orphan who lives with her grandmother in a small European village. When the local rabbi announces that he has chosen Jessie to travel to America in his place, everyone is surprised, especially Jessie and her grandmother. Jessie is nervous about leaving her beloved grandmother and going to live in such a faraway place, but she soon feels at home in America, where she finds work as a seamstress. Each week Jessie earns three coins, which she saves in a jar in the hope that someday she will have enough money to bring her grandmother over to America. Illustrated with watercolor and gouache paintings.
